I said in an earlier blog posting that my goal for this summer is to catch a 60″ fish on the Ottawa River. Some of you might think that you
But that just isn’t how it works.
You may be surprised to know that if I decide to go after Large Mouth Bass, that’s all that bites. And if I go after Small Mouth Bass, that’s all that bites. And if I decide to go after Catfish, that’s all that bites.
Just lucky you may say, but it is not true. I have to prepare for each species of fish in a different way. Just throwing a hook into the water seldom gets much if anything at all. But, when I do my homework, learn all I can about the fish I want to catch, it is a whole other story. That said, the boat is now ready for the water and my fishing rods are ready to go.
Yup, preparation is not just necessary, but without it, I am only “Dreaming in Color” as they say in Quebec. With out preparation, it just doesn’t work.
And life is like this as well. No matter what your goal, if you don’t do your homework, if you don’t prepare, chances are that you are going to come up short.
What have you found with your experiences?

Great point guys, goals without preparation and execution are merely dreams. While dreams are great, at some point we need to make them happen.
Here is a great blog post I came across that compares goals with promises – and how to turn the former into the latter to realize them – http://www.pickthebrain.com/blog/why-goal-setting-is-a-complete-waste-of-time-unless-you-do-this-2/
This made a lot of sense to me, especially the emotional attachment involved with a promise versus a goal.
Obviously Tony – you have great emotional attachment to catching the big one…can’t wait to see the pictures
And I shall share the picture with everyone. Seriously, I find fishing is like meditation, you get to touch nature, it slows you down and feeds the soul. And a 60″ fish is pretty cool too.
Such a great story and lesson learned from here. Well, I believe too that goal setting preparation is not a difficult task, but if it is done improperly you can end up not getting the goals you want. The worst part is you will not even realize it.

[...] Tony Brunelle touches on this very well in his personal blog post – setting out how he will achieve his goal of catching a bigger fish…tell me this goal isn't backed by PASSION! In fact, his passion doesn't come from catching the fish so much, but rather from being one with nature, the meditative impact of being on the water and the sport of fishing. [...]
I really don’t know the guy but I feel compelled to comment. Life is really about passion. We can have several passions. Whether is our businesses, fishing or other sports, the full understanding of naturism or other things.
It’s when you lose that passion is when life declines.
It’s all about PASSION.
Life without passion is like food without spice. You are right, it’s about passion
