boxoflightsHappy Holidays!

The buzz is in the air. People are feeling good. Well, some people.

Others are feeling stressed.

The holidays offer a mixed bag of experiences ranging from shopping, family, eating, sharing, parties, laughing, crying, wrapping, unwrapping, baking, cooking, sledding, skiing, crashing, driving, dancing, talking, shouting, sleeping, singing, praying, visiting, arriving, leaving, returning, opening, tidying, scrubbing, playing, acting, shovelling, sliding, snowing, raining, building, clearing, resting, working, buying, waiting, meeting, reflecting and, OH, so much more.

How about we find the purpose behind all of this?

The holidays, in the end, are all about love. Don’t let that slip your mind. If you have love, if you can give love, then there’s little else to worry about.

The best parts are spent with the people you love, and it’s those moments of sharing, laughing, and talking that will be remembered.

What’s your favourite holiday memory? Be it Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or whatever you celebrate, we’d love to hear about your favourite moments.

I’ll get us started:

One of my favourite Christmas memories is that of my family sitting around our gas fireplace, eating hummus with crackers and playing Cranium. My husband, Tony, was trying to hum Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones to my kids without ANY success. It still makes me laugh just remembering. Our being together and playing together was priceless – especially since we’re all normally spread apart and leading separate lives. It’s better than any present.

It’s good to be reminded that these times aren’t about the madness. They’re about love.

Please share your best holiday experiences. We would love to hear your comments and then just click the check box to get the latest comments on your comments.  Too Cool, eh?

Until next time – Happy Holidays!

As a child in Barbados, Christmas time was when Nature pulled out all her splendour.

The sugar cane would throw up their arrows and soon the green sugar cane fields would turn a fuzzy, lilac colour for miles around. To me, this was the closest think to snow that I could imagine, never having seen snow until I was 15 years old.

The poinsettia bushes all across the island would turn brilliant red. In our garden, I loved seeing the two 8-foot wide circles of 3-foot high green poinsettias turn red. Elsewhere on the island, 10-foot high hedges of red poinsettias planted next to white snow-on-the-mountain flowers were my idea of gardening perfection.

When I came to Canada, my artist friend, William, made me a ceramic cup, plate and cereal bowl which featured two sugar cane arrows painted blue on them. Decades later, I still have his pottery.

Sugar cane arrows, poinsettias and snow-on-the-mountain are my cherished symbols of Christmas in Barbados.

What beautiful memories. So different from our Canadian Christmas images that I have. Thanks for sharing!

This year I am going to Hungary for Christmas. It’s not the same as home, but hopefully some great new memories will be created.

But my fav memory so far is a running tradition – opening stockings each year. We’ve had them since I can remember.

  5. Francoise says:

    Hi Catherine,

I’m sure you’ll create great new memories in such a beautiful country as Hungary.

Despite leaving hot, dry Barbados many years ago, I’m fascinated by the magic of Canada’s winter – delicate ice crystals on the window, fluffy snow, mysterious fog. I feel like a kid every time it snows :)

My favourite memories were coming home from church on Christmas morning and seeing the tree with all these gifts under it. They were all covered with newspaper because my parents couldn’t wrap all the gifts. Eight kids all excited and we would have to wait until after breakfast before my dad would hand out the presents. I can still see it now.

  7. Dan says:

My favorite holiday memory would have to be the time I was in christmas mass when all of a sudden we left the ceremony unexpectadley and realized later that we went the wrong way, lol.
