We all know about bullying, if not from personal experience, then from the press. And now the National Press is reporting on a study done at Queen’s University in Kingston that has found that “obese teenage girls are three times more likely to be bullies than the slimmer girls in their class”.
And when you think about it, it makes sense. Just think of how our society idolizes the thin and lean, especially when it comes to women. And then realize how persecuted the obese are, again, especially women.

It is truly a sad state of affairs when the truth causes a controversy like this. The State of Georgia has taken the bold step of making some videos stating the truth about childhood obesity. The truth, it’s no fun being overweight.

But what is happening? People are complaining about the videos! Yup, drawing attention to the problem is considered politically incorrect. No solutions offered is the cry.

When it comes to our health, we like to think that we are in control. And if we are not in control, a quick visit to our family doctor will put it back into our control. Once person I was working with recently told me, completely serious when he said this, I’m in great health! When I asked him if he were on any medications, he then listed one drug after the other. He was on a drug for his high cholesterol. “But as long as I take the drug, I’m just fine”, he said. And then he told me about the drug he was taking for his high blood pressure. And the drug he was taking for his blood sugar. And that his diet was working well, that he had lost 5 pounds over the last 3 months (he weights almost 300 pounds). He seriously thought he was in great health, that he had everything under control.

TheGlobe and Mail just released a story about obesity. And just when I thought we were “beating a dead horse” in trying to sound the alarm bells about this problem. Turns out that in Ontario, 75% of adults are overweight and we are closing in on the Americans for the world obesity record! Yikes!
Simple things, such as exercise are suggested to start to combat this. And of course there is diet. Perhaps we should have a special tax on all things
“Dairy Queen” just like we do with cigarettes. Because, bottom line, we are all going to have to pay the bill for this epidemic. Sooner or later, the health
costs will go out of site as our population enlarges.
