Growing Older, Growing Strong

Aging treeIt has been said that youth is wasted on the young and as I age, I agree more and more with that statement everyday.

Men reach their physical peak at about age 30 and their sexual peak at about age 18.  That just doesn’t seem right, at least not to me as I sailed past these peaks and didn’t even know they existed.  Now that I am on the downward slide toward old age, I think that someone should do something about reversing this error in our DNA.

Yup, it’s our DNA that is to blame for this horrible mistake about our physiology.  We have a timer built in that results in predicable age related inconveniencies.  Our vision goes followed by  tinnitus and hearing loss.  Of course our skin starts to wrinkle and worse, our sex drive will start to wane.  As the old cowboy said, “I am not good as I once was, but I am as good as I was once.”

Can anything be done to reverse this downward spiral, or at least slow it down?  It seems pretty inevitable but actually there are some things that will help keep you younger longer, and they are not that hard to do, if you have the will power to persist.  So here are a few of the most potent anti-aging methods I have found to date:

  • Exercise: This 8 letter word is a put off for many people, but ‘use it or lose it’– that saying is exactly right.
  • Detoxify your body:  Just looking at the obesity rates in the US and Canada should tell you something.  We have a lot of toxic waste in our bodies.  Detox by using a high fiber diet. If you want to go further, try a colonic. It’ll clean out your colon where food is impacted and rotting away. Also, herbal remedies such as dandelion root help clean out your liver.  Homeopathic remedies are a powerful way to clean your body, so check this out as well.
  • Diet: Stop poisoning yourself with all the prepared foods that  you are eating.  I know it’s inconvenient, but you’re going to feel a difference.
  • Nutrition:  Our foods have lost most of their nutrient value in the last 55 years, due mainly to the use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.  We are eating foods empty of the vitamins, minerals and oils that we need. Supplements are necessary for all healthy people, and yes, there is a difference between vitamins and vitamin companies.  Vitamin B6 is used to help with menstrual cramps but there are two forms, the cheap version called  Pyridoxal HCl and the one that cost more but works called Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate.  The difference is in the way your body reacts and absorbs the higher quality supplements.
  • Stress.  The stress hormone is called cortisol and it is responsible for weight gain, graying hair and a weakened immune system. Just watch President Obama’s hair turn white over the next year.  So find ways to deal with your stress and reduce it!

Do you feel young in your body? What positive habits have you pick up to help ensure a positive aging process? How do you feel about you’re changing body? We’d love to hear your viewpoints. Please share your thoughts!

Until next time,

Dr Tony

    Dear Drs. Marcelle and Tony:
I am 64 years old and glad to have lived this long. I have attained what I yearned most for in life: to be a writer, painter, and psychologist. I am a social psychologist by virtue of my having earned the degree of Master of Arts major in Psychology (with Social and Community Psychology as area of concentration). Now, in my old age, I am ready to dream some more. I am giving myself ten years (if I am still alive by that time) to get what I want in this portion of my life. I spent six decades building a strong foundation for these last years in my life so that I will be able to add my two cents worth of insights (actually they are more than two cents worth, it is just my way of saying that money works for me and that if I can raise two cents I can raise more, because whatever amount of money you earn, you can duplicate it by using the principles by which you earned that money honestly and profitably) to people’s arsenals in life. I aim to reach out to people through my writings and paintings and eventually as a social psychologist (the last, by using what I know of social psychology which will benefit individuals and communities). I am making this self-talk so that I can rev the engine of self-confidence in my life. I know and believe that self-confidence is a necessary ingredient in attaining success. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please let me hear from you.
    Very truly yours,

This is idea somewhat reminds me of that Benjamin button film with reversing the aging process. But even that character (fictional of course) suffered dementia once he was physically a child and his independence was severely limited.

Youth has its problems just like old age. Of course there are peaks – but there’s the building up to that peak as well (which take an awful lot of effort, uncertainty, and mood swings).

I guess you are right in focusing on how the body can stay healthy. Often times when I feel good, life feels good. Living well goes beyond simply the physical, but it is nice to have that corresponding aspect in good shape too.

I read something the other day discussing whether it were possible to make humans live to a hundred plus years by transplanting new organs for failing ones, and changing old hip joints with high tech replacements (which we already do – but this was suggesting taking things to the next level with wide scale organ replacement, or regenerating organs). Sounds like science fiction to me, but even if it isn’t I feel there’s some sort of invisible line that shouldn’t be crossed. It’s one thing to live to a hundred because you take good care of your body; it’s another to get a whole new body in order to last another 50 or 500 years. Or maybe not – there’s a line, I think, but it might change more and more as new medical advancements before more accepted. Maybe one day we’ll all live to be 1000. Now that would be weird.

  3. Lucie Brunet says:

When I turned 55 this year, I initially resisted it because 55 is closer to 60 than it is to 50… But then I thought: my body still feels like I’m 45, so that’s my biological age. However, when a situation calls for my inner wisdom, then I’m definitely 55!

  4. Tony says:

    To Migen,
Self-Confidence is everything. The beginning, the middle and the end. With it you can move mountains and without it, life becomes very hard indeed. Good luck with your new endeavours.

  5. Francoise says:

I like the wisdom, confidence, inner peace and happiness that I am attaining as I get older. Physically, I can’t do the things I used to do when I was younger, and that brings the recognition that I need to treat my body, mind and spirit well. Would I want to be young again? Not at all! I am a much happier person now that I have a good foundation of wisdom on which to base my future growth.

  6. Tony says:

Oh to have the wisdom of our years and be young at the same time. But wisdom only comes from experience, so you are right, be happy were we are and go into the future in a better place than ever before.
