Earth Hour has come and gone for another year. Did you turn off the lights to watch TV in the dark? I hope so. We did. Celine Dione was on tv and I wasn’t going to miss that. What an incredible woman. What an inspiration to all of us.
And that got Marcelle and I talking about real commitment vs token offerings. What do I mean? I am talking about Earth Hour, that’s what I mean. Bottom line, it is just a token offering to the planet?
For the die-hards, they might even turn off the TV and just sit in the dark for the hour. But lets get serious. What did we actually do? Those who participated stopped their usual life styles for 1 hour. Maybe we should have Earth Hour at 3:00 a.m. when everyone is asleep. That way it wouldn’t inconvenience anyone at all and we could all feel good about ourselves.
Are you really serious about helping this planet? Then how about Earth Week, where for 1 week we all do what we can to cut back on our energy usage. Just think, taking the bus to work instead of your car, or even riding a bike. Just think, turning down the thermometer in your house a few degrees for a whole week. Just think, stopping unproductive waste of our precious recources?
And why wouldn’t we do that? We have thought of a few reasons:
So what do you think? Is Earth Hour worth the effort, or should we strive for something meaningful?

Pfft Earth Hour….
What ever happened to Earth LIFE!?
I think Earth Hour is good idea. Earth Hour is to the environmental movement what Christmas is to toy manufacturers. Just as everyone is thinking Christmas from Halloween on, so people begin thinking about the environmental movement leading up to Earth Hour. Earth Hour also provides an acceptable reason to try breaking energy-use habits, if only for an hour and raises awareness of how dependent we are on electricity. I, for one, would be out of a job without electricity.
Without electricity, our whole economy would shut down. But we could probably save a lot of energy at a relatively small price compared to building another nuclear generator.
How true!
Every day that comes by as it’s earth for us. My husband and I have founded our own humanitarian organisation that drill water wells in Africa. Thirty hours a week of voluntary work each. Since I was five years old I knew that one day… the rest is history. We now have a total of eight wells drilled and we are going back in january for three other wells. Our goal for 2012 is a total of 10 wells. Imagine, one well costs 15,000$. We are eager to retire to invest ourselves totaly in our misson. Yes we can make a difference but to every sacrifice there is a costs (lack of time, lack of energy, family, stress, and so on). We are willing to pay !
Wow, that is putting words into action. Congratulations Nicole!
