With the temperatures at and above 30 centigrade for the last two weeks, this is a bonafide heat wave. And yes, we must keep our fluids up, and yes, stay out of the mid-day sun.
But what happens to people in the dog-days of summer? It seems as though we just put life on hold. We can do it tomorrow, there is no rush, relax and enjoy life. And stopping to smell the roses is important. But every year it never fails to amaze me how people put their health second or third or even fourth on their list of priorities. Unless you are in a lot of pain, taking care of oneself just doesn’t seem to have the importance it once did.
I am sure that is why school is out for summer. Kid can’t sit through this incredible weather inside a class room. We need to be out and about in the sunshine. Does office productivity drop in the summer months where you work? I am sure efficiency experts know the answer to that one.
Have you noticed this phenomena at your office?
I don’t like hot weather; never have even though I grew up in Barbados. During the past heat wave, I was worried about “Midnight”, my own name for him since I don’t know his real name or his real caretakers. He’s the little black cat from down the street who gets abandoned whenever people move out. It’s as if he comes with the house that’s been sold many times over, and I’m guessing he must now be about 8 years old.
Lately, he’s been losing weight and has started waking me up at 5:30 a.m. to be fed. During the heat wave, I put out a bowl of water for him just to make sure he had access to water. Turns out that the young squirrels and a crow think the bowl of water is a good idea; they have been drinking out of it too.
When the weather gets really hot or really cold, I keep an eye out for the stray cats and the urban wildlife on our street. I’ve been noticing how urban wildlife is not as resilient as people think. Four years ago when someone cut down a tree in their yard, we lost a colony of 25 goldfinches which nested in that tree.
In the meantime, I’m going to try to find out what’s happening in Midnight’s life. He’s been showing signs of wanting to come and live with me and my other felines, but I have to make sure I’m not snatching someone’s pet from off the street.
