I’ve been working like a mad woman lately. The office is switching systems for bookkeeping, and that means everything needs to be checked, double checked and transferred. So it’s times like these when I must take my own advice.
Little holidays are so essential in a busy routine, and yet, if you’re anything like me, it’s almost too easy to ignore that side of a balance work ethic. When a job demands my attention, I get all charged up and focus on reaching my goals, meeting those deadlines, finishing that task.
But isn’t it exhausting? Don’t you feel exhausted?
I feel exhausted. And that’s because sometimes I forget that when it comes to tackling a project – all work and no play makes Marcelle (me, and probably you too) exhausted.
Today I will take my own advice and try to get my life-work-balance in order. And if you can empathize with what I’ve been writing, I suggest you do this too.
Here’s a list of my favourite little holiday ideas:
So there’s my list. What’s yours? I’m always looking for ideas on how to decompress, and getting responses would be a good reminded that – yes – it is time for a break.
Thanks for reading. I hope this ‘little holiday’ from your work has been worthwhile.
To your success!

My little vacations include spending time in my backyard under my big maple tree named “Ed”. It’s my little oasis.
On the days when I’m not doing my personal training with JP Brunelle, I’m doing my own exercices where “Ed” shades me from the sun, and where I listen to the rustle of the leaves and the songs of two competing male cardinals. I become lost in the cardinals’ songs which are quite distinctive, and before I know it, an hour is done, I’ve accomplished my exercises and feel good about that, and I have enjoyed the peacefulness of my back yard.
I also like to read 15 to 30 minutes before I go to bed. I get immersed in a good story which brings me to another world, and then realise it’s time to sleep when the story becomes a blur… it’s a gentle way to fall asleep with my mind in another world.
Hey- that’s funny Francoise, because my fav little vacation is also laying under the maple tree on my parent’s front lawn. I love that spot; it’s hosted many fond, summer day memories.
Maple trees are the best.
Hi Catherine,
I like your sentiment, “Maple trees are the best”. I definitely feel that way about them.
When I was a little girl growing up in Barbados, I spent a lot of time at school sitting under my favourite mahogany tree. They have a rough bark with vertical lines (like a maple), and grow nice and tall with a beautiful, shady canopy (like a maple).
One day, a small piece of mahogany bark, the size of my thumb and shaped like the island of Barbados, broke off into my hands. I discovered that if I rubbed it with another piece of bark, I could create a beautiful polished mini “Barbados” which had the rich, red vibrant colours of polished mahogany. This little piece of wood was a treasure for me. Stands of mahogany trees are not very common in Barbados, but when you see them, you realize how majestic they are.
Both maple and mahogany trees give me the same feeling of peace, comfort and being “at home”. Different trees, different countries, yet the same magical feeling of belonging.
We need to remember this and not forget. There is so much more to life than just work. Great Post
Thank You.
