You Never Know

I bumped into a former client of mine the other day, someone that I haven’t seen in about 20 years.  We exchanged pleasantries and she said how good she was feeling.  And then we both went our separate ways.  A few weeks later, I got a letter from her that I want to share with you.

“Dear Tony,

It was nice to see you a couple of weeks ago…. I want to thank you for your past services with regard to my neck injury and to let you know that I have been completely pain free since last leaving your office many years ago. …

It would be nice to know which of the techniques you used that made the difference.  Regardless, I am truly grateful for your services, and for the care and attention that you provided to me.  I thought that I would be living with neck pain for my entire life.  I am forever thankful to you.  You have made a very real difference to the quality of my life.

I wish you all the best in the years ahead.

Best regards,  C.D.”

It doesn’t really matter what technique I used to help her.  What does matter is that you never know, when you do something, what the long term results may be.  Getting a note from the past brings that into perspective.  What experiences have you, dear reader, had where your actions a long time ago affected someone’s life?

Tony, you probably have no idea how many people you have helped over the years.

I know when I first came to you in my early 20′s I had already been to 8 different doctors and so-called specialists after losing close to 30 lbs, having virtually no immune system left, in constant stomach pain and even starting to experience numbness and paralysis in my legs/arms.

After months and months of dealing with this – within two weeks of visiting you I was already so much better.

Since then, our family has gone through several challenges and you have always been there with real help…great to see that you hear from others as well.

    Jeff

I think that you changed my life in an incredible way recently. I appreciated
    your effort.

My life was ruined by a liar and that is one of the main reasons I am
financially beleaguered and destroyed. The liar of which I refer has continued ruining other peoples lives via a corrupt judicial, corrupt law enforcement and other unethical vehicles.

Again, I wish to express to you that you changed my life.

    Sincerely,
    Eric

    Hi Tony,

I enjoy so much hearing other people comment about how you have helped them. Thank you, Jeff and Eric, for sharing your stories. I agree that Tony is a very special person.

One of my happiest examples of how I have affected someone’s life occurred a few years ago when my career coach asked me if I could provide some guidance to a client of his who was seeking a job in research. I remember meeting a very bright, young PhD graduate who had just moved to Canada and who was looking for his first job in a career in research. I provided him with an overview of different research establishments in Canada, and strongly suggested he apply to one organization in particular where I thought his skills as a scientist would be highly regarded. He told me he had already applied there, had been rejected, and didn’t feel inclined to apply there again. I told him to apply again because it seemed to me that’s where he could really grow.

Three months after I met him, he wrote me a wonderful letter thanking me for my guidance in helping him choose a path that was most suited for his skills. He had applied again to the organization I had mentioned, and had obtained a job which he really liked.

I was stunned that a two-hour conversation with me could result in him finding a job just four months after he arrived in Canada, at an organization where the competition process for jobs is highly competitive. It felt nice that I could provide him with guidance, but what I felt the most was a strong admiration for his work and determination in getting there. I was indeed impressed by this young man whom I only meet for two hours of intensive discussion.
